Course Description
This learning activity addresses food insecurity as a critical health issue affecting nearly one in five students in American schools. School nurses will learn to identify food insecurity through validated screening tools like the Hunger Vital Sign, recognize physical and behavioral indicators during routine assessments, and understand the physiological and psychological impacts of inadequate nutrition on student health and academic performance. The content presents the 3A framework (Assess, Address, Advocate) as a practical approach for implementing immediate interventions, building partnerships with food service staff and community organizations, connecting families to resources like SNAP and WIC, and advocating for systems-level change including universal meal programs. Participants will gain actionable strategies to integrate food security screening into daily practice, provide discreet nutrition support, reduce stigma, and evaluate program effectiveness - transforming their ability to address chronic health conditions, behavior challenges, and academic difficulties rooted in food insecurity.
