Course Description
This learning activity Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their profound impact on lifelong health, providing registered nurses with evidence-based knowledge to recognize, assess, and respond to childhood trauma across all practice settings. The content explores ten ACE categories, dose-response relationships between cumulative adversity and chronic disease, and contemporary trends including the opioid crisis, intergenerational trauma transmission, and health disparities affecting vulnerable populations. Nurses will learn to implement trauma-informed care principles, distinguish between universal screening controversies and targeted assessment approaches, promote Positive Childhood Experiences as protective factors, and navigate the ethical complexities of mandatory reporting while maintaining therapeutic relationships. Through clinical examples and practical guidance, this activity emphasizes shifting from deficit-focused to strength-based care, recognizing that early identification and support can potentially alter health trajectories when accompanied by adequate resources and comprehensive follow-up systems.
