Course Description
This learning activity introduces nurses to augmented reality (AR) as an emerging tool in clinical education and practice, covering how AR differs from virtual reality, its current applications in anatomy visualization, procedural training, assessment skill-building, and team-based emergency simulation, along with the evidence supporting these uses and its current limitations. The content also addresses the human factors that determine whether AR tools succeed in real clinical workflows, such as alarm fatigue, ergonomics, and workflow integration, as well as the regulatory and patient-privacy considerations under HIPAA and HITECH that apply when AR systems handle patient information. Nurses completing this activity will be equipped to critically evaluate AR-based educational and clinical tools, recognize their appropriate role alongside hands-on mentorship and clinical judgment, and advocate for thoughtful, patient-centered technology adoption within their practice setting.
