Course Description
This learning activity addresses the school nurse's critical role in reducing chronic absenteeism, which has nearly doubled post-pandemic from 15% to 28-30% nationally. It examines health-related drivers including communicable diseases, chronic conditions, mental health challenges, and social determinants of health. The activity provides evidence-based interventions nurses can implement immediately: systematic health screening at 5 absences, individualized health plans, data integration, community partnerships, and advocacy strategies. Content emphasizes the school nurse's unique position bridging healthcare and education, offers practical implementation strategies for nurses serving multiple buildings, and reinforces that addressing health-related absenteeism falls within the professional scope of school nursing practice.
