Course Description
This learning activity prepares school nurses to recognize, assess, and respond to climate-related health impacts affecting students. The conent examines how extreme heat, degraded air quality, and vector-borne disease expansion create distinct health risks for student populations, with emphasis on physiological vulnerabilities in children and disproportionate impacts on students with chronic conditions or from disadvantaged communities. Nurses will learn to conduct climate-informed health assessments, implement evidence-based interventions including heat illness protocols and air quality action plans, address climate-related mental health concerns, and develop systematic documentation practices that support advocacy efforts. The activity guides nurses in creating collaborative partnerships with school staff, families, and community organizations while providing practical strategies for advocating for infrastructure improvements and climate-informed policies that build health resilience within school communities.
