Course Description
This evidence-based learning activity provides nurses with comprehensive guidance on delayed umbilical cord clamping practices for term and preterm infants. The content explores the physiologic rationale for placental transfusion, current ACOG and WHO guidelines recommending minimum delay periods of 30-60 seconds for term and 60 seconds for preterm neonates, and the clinical benefits including improved hemodynamic stability, enhanced iron stores, and reduced mortality in preterm populations. Nurses will learn practical implementation strategies including assessment techniques during the delay period, thermoregulation management, troubleshooting common clinical scenarios such as short cords and nuchal cords, and recognition of contraindications requiring immediate clamping. The activity emphasizes nursing roles in advocacy, team communication, quality improvement, and comprehensive documentation to translate evidence-based cord management guidelines into improved perinatal outcomes.
