Course Description
This learning activity explores evidence-based, autism-affirming communication strategies for nurses caring for autistic patients across clinical settings. Drawing on current neurodiversity-affirming frameworks, it examines how sensory processing differences, literal language interpretation, and distress responses impact the patient-nurse encounter, and provides practical, individualized approaches to address them. Topics include sensory-safe environment creation, plain language techniques, behavioral support during meltdown and shutdown states, and the development of patient-specific communication plans for documentation and handoff.
