Course Description
This learning activity explores emotional intelligence (EI) as an essential clinical competency and self-care strategy for registered nurses. Drawing on Daniel Goleman's five-component framework - self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills - the content examines how EI enhances patient communication, supports ethical decision-making, strengthens colleague relationships, and prevents burnout. Through realistic clinical scenarios and evidence-based techniques, nurses learn practical strategies for developing emotional intelligence that fit within the realities of shift work and high-stress environments. The activity addresses current healthcare trends including technology integration, telehealth expansion, and post-pandemic burnout, while providing actionable tools such as mindful self-check-ins, reflective journaling, and peer support practices. Emphasizing that EI can be systematically developed through deliberate practice, this learning activity equips nurses with skills to provide patient-centered care while protecting their own emotional wellbeing and sustaining meaningful, long-term nursing careers.
