Course Description
This comprehensive learning activity equips nurses across all practice settings to recognize, assess, and respond effectively to adolescent mental health needs during an unprecedented youth behavioral health crisis. The material examines current epidemiology and health disparities, explores how depression, anxiety, trauma, self-harm, and eating disorders uniquely present in adolescents, and provides practical guidance on conducting assessments using evidence-based frameworks including HEADSS and validated screening tools. Nurses will learn trauma-informed communication techniques, direct suicide risk assessment, collaborative safety planning, and appropriate escalation to specialized services. Emphasizing a recovery-oriented perspective, the content integrates prevention and early intervention principles into everyday practice while addressing confidentiality, family engagement, and reducing care barriers for LGBTQ+ youth and racially/ethnically diverse populations.
