Course Description
This learning activity equips nurses with essential knowledge and skills to recognize, assess, and manage mental health challenges in older adults, focusing on depression, anxiety, and dementia-related behaviors. The content explores atypical presentations of mental health conditions in geriatric populations that frequently lead to underdiagnosis, and provides evidence-based strategies for screening and differentiation using standardized tools and clinical observation. Nurses learn trauma-informed, person-centered approaches that view behaviors as communication of unmet needs, and discover non-pharmacological interventions proven effective for geriatric mental health. The activity covers current care delivery trends including integrated care models, the CMS GUIDE dementia program, and aging-in-place initiatives, while emphasizing the importance of nurse self-care and interdisciplinary collaboration in providing sustainable, compassionate geriatric mental health care.
