Course Description
This learning activity provides nurses with a comprehensive, evidence-based review of kangaroo care (KC) and kangaroo mother care (KMC) for preterm and low birth weight infants, synthesizing current WHO, AAP, and AWHONN guidelines alongside key clinical trial data on mortality, sepsis, thermoregulation, and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The content covers practical implementation strategies for immediate and continuous skin-to-skin contact across delivery, postpartum, and NICU settings, safe positioning and monitoring practices to prevent sudden unexpected postnatal collapse, and approaches for sustaining kangaroo care through discharge and into the home. Designed to build clinical competency and confidence, the learning activity equips nurses to advocate for and safely implement kangaroo care as a standard, evidence-based intervention within family-centered perinatal and neonatal nursing practice.
