Course Description
This learning activity examines workplace incivility, bullying, and lateral violence in nursing as measurable occupational health hazards rather than an inevitable part of the job, using current data on prevalence, staffing pressures, and psychological safety to frame the issue as both a personal and organizational concern. Written for practicing nurses at any career stage, it moves from real-time self-protective strategies - including cognitive rehearsal and assertive communication - to system-level responses such as Joint Commission-mandated prevention programs, formal reporting channels, and recovery resources, equipping nurses to recognize toxic dynamics early, respond to them safely and professionally, and understand when responsibility for change belongs to the system rather than the individual.
