Course Description
This learning activity equips school nurses to recognize, assess, and respond to student mental health crises using a trauma-informed, multitiered framework. Through composite clinical scenarios, it covers suicide risk screening with the NIMH ASQ and Brief Suicide Safety Assessment pathway, de-escalation techniques for acute behavioral distress, and coordination with counselors, administrators, families, and community crisis resources including 988. The content also addresses equity considerations in recognizing crisis presentations across diverse student populations, objective crisis documentation practices, and strategies for managing secondary traumatic stress and burnout - reinforcing that all interventions occur within each nurse's state scope-of-practice and district protocol.
