Course Description
This learning activity provides nurses with essential knowledge and skills for recognizing and managing pediatric sepsis, a time-sensitive emergency affecting over 75,000 children annually in the United States. The content examines age-specific risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms including warm and cold shock presentations, and evidence-based screening tools such as the Phoenix Sepsis Score. Nurses will learn to identify subtle clinical deterioration including behavioral changes and developmental-appropriate vital sign abnormalities that precede cardiovascular collapse. The activity emphasizes rapid, guideline-concordant interventions, including aggressive fluid resuscitation, timely antimicrobial therapy, and vasoactive medication management. Throughout the learning activity, the critical role of nursing vigilance, clinical judgment, family-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration is highlighted as essential to improving outcomes for children with this life-threatening condition.
