Course Description
This comprehensive learning activity examines pediatric sleep disorders from a developmental nursing perspective, addressing the complex sleep challenges affecting 25-40% of children and adolescents. The content covers evidence-based assessment strategies using validated screening tools, developmental considerations across age groups from infancy through adolescence, and behavioral interventions including graduated extinction, sleep hygiene education, and cognitive-behavioral therapy adaptations. Key topics include common pediatric sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and behavioral insomnia, pharmacological considerations with emphasis on melatonin use and safety, family education strategies, and interprofessional collaboration approaches. Special attention is given to children with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism spectrum disorders and ADHD, while emphasizing the nurse's role in holistic assessment, intervention implementation, and care coordination to optimize developmental outcomes and sleep health in pediatric populations.
