Course Description
This learning activity provides maternal-newborn nurses with a comprehensive review of prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM), covering pathophysiology, diagnostic assessment, and gestational-age-specific management from term through previable and periviable presentations. The content emphasizes evidence-based thresholds for antenatal corticosteroids, latency antibiotics, and magnesium sulfate neuroprotection; current guidance on shared decision-making in the late preterm window; non-directive counseling for previable and periviable PPROM; and pattern-based nursing surveillance for maternal and fetal infection. Through this activity, nurses will strengthen their ability to integrate physiologic reasoning, current practice guidelines, and compassionate, individualized counseling when caring for patients across the full spectrum of membrane rupture presentations.
