Course Description
This learning activity provides nurses with evidence-based knowledge and practical skills for caring for patients with substance use disorders across all clinical settings. The content examines the neurobiology of addiction as a chronic brain disease, current epidemiological trends including the fentanyl crisis, and comprehensive treatment approaches including medications for opioid use disorder (methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone), behavioral therapies, and harm reduction strategies. Nurses will learn to conduct universal substance use screening, utilize non-stigmatizing communication techniques including motivational interviewing, safely manage patients receiving medication-assisted treatment, distribute naloxone for overdose prevention, and advocate for evidence-based care at individual, institutional, and systems levels. The module emphasizes person-first language, addresses implicit bias, and equips nurses to serve as agents of hope and healing for patients affected by substance use disorders.
