Course Description
This learning activity examines the pressing issue of fatigue among hospital employees. It defines fatigue and differentiates it from ordinary tiredness. Various organizational and individual causes including long shifts, medical issues, poor health habits, and sleep disorders are explored. Substantial negative impacts of provider fatigue on medical errors, patient health, staff burnout, hospital productivity, and personal wellbeing are summarized. Evidence-based preventative solutions hospital leadership could implement are presented such as ensuring adequate staffing, establishing fatigue detection policies, optimizing shifts, providing sleep disorder assessments, and supporting mental health. Personal coping strategies employees can independently apply like proper sleep hygiene, strategic napping, maintaining healthy lifestyles, and acute alertness techniques are also overviewed.
