Course Description
This learning activity equips school nurses with evidence-based trauma-informed care strategies using SAMHSA's six core principles and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. The content explains how trauma affects brain development and presents through physical symptoms, behavioral changes, and emotional dysregulation, with particular emphasis on recognizing and addressing health inequities and implicit bias. Practical guidance includes creating safe environments, conducting trauma-sensitive assessments, using objective documentation, managing frequent health office visitors, responding to crises, and preventing secondary traumatic stress. Through case-based examples, nurses learn to recognize behavior as communication and respond in ways that promote healing while positioning their health offices as refuges where trauma-exposed students receive consistent, caring support.
