Course Description
This learning activity equips nurses to better understand, identify, and assist victims of human trafficking they may encounter in healthcare settings. It examines the scope of domestic human trafficking, profiles of traffickers, common recruitment tactics, risk factors for victimization, indicators that could prompt screening particular patients, and appropriate trauma-informed response protocols focused on patient safety, privacy, and referral to comprehensive support services. Nurses are prepared to recognize signs of potential exploitation, conduct sensitive screening following protocols to reveal possible trafficking, report suspicions appropriately with victim consent, document critical details for investigations, and compassionately care for victim health needs while connecting them to help. Practical guidance helps clinicians provide patient-centered, ethical interventions assessing for trafficking and responding via multidisciplinary partnerships across community agencies.
